Obituary of Joseph W. Smith Jr.
Joseph W. Smith Jr., of Seabrook, NH and formerly of Lynnfield and Topsfield, MA, died Wednesday at the Beverly Hospital after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Lynnfield the son of the late J. Warren and Grace (Griffith) Smith and was a graduate of the Essex Agricultural Institute in Hathorne.
He had been a truck driver in the transportation industry and had a love for the road for over 45 years prior to his illness. He had been a member of the Army National Guard serving three terms during the Korean War with the 103 rd Field Artillery from 1951 until his discharge in 1960. He was also a member of many veterans’ organizations on the North Shore and served as president of the Yankee Division Veterans Assn. (YDVA) and the second corps cadets. He marched in many military and civic parades carrying the colors to honor all veterans who served their country.
He loved to travel and had a passion for ballroom dancing. He also enjoyed reading history books, a love for the outdoors , loved to dine out and spend precious time with his family. He will be missed by all his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Linda (McKenney) Smith of Seabrook, NH, his children, Paul and his wife Donna Smith of Derry, NH, Michael and his wife Candida Smith of North Reading, Diane and her husband Allen Glenn of Mt. Laurel NJ and Sandra Smith of Lynn, a brother, Edward Smith of Colorado, a sister, Ann and her husband Walter Brown of NH, five grandchildren, Rachel Smith of Lynn, James and Joseph Glenn of New Jersey, and Matthew and Danny Smith of NH, 4 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Friday from 4:00 until 7:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 82 Lynn St., Peabody facility. His Funeral Service will be held at the Funeral Home on Saturday at 10:00 AM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Burial will be in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody.
