Obituary of John Fillos

John Fillos, known to many as “Barba Yianni,” died Sunday afternoon after a brief illness at the Beverly Hospital, at the fruitful age of 90. He was the beloved husband of Anthe (Keriakedes) Fillos formerly of Sioux City, Iowa. He was born in Peabody on February 7, 1918 and was the son of the late Stavros and Katina Triantafillos. He has lived in Salem for most of his life and was a graduate of Salem High School. After high school, he attended Bentley College and later graduated from the Gemological Institute of New York. For two years, he served with the United States Marine Corps during World War II. John was a jeweler for Long’s Jewelers and Shreve, Crump, and Low, both in Boston, and Daniel Lows in Salem. He was an avid amateur hockey player, enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the Municipal Golf Course in Salem, loved painting, sketching, and playing with his grandchildren. John was a lifelong member of St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church in Peabody. Besides his loving wife Anthe, with whom he shared over 62 years of marriage, John is survived by his son Stevan Fillos of Atlanta, Georgia, two daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah and Peter Pantazelos of Danvers, and Pamela and Theodore Soteropoulos of Salem, along with his six grandchildren, Dimitri Fillos and Alexis Fillos-Ibbs of Atlanta, Georgia, Thanasi and Yianno Pantazelos of Danvers, Ismini and Dimitri Soteropoulos of Salem, and a great granddaughter, Charlotte Fillos-Ibbs of Atlanta, Georgia. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. His Funeral Service will be held on Friday at 10:00 AM at St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, Peabody, followed by burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
