I had the privilege and pleasure of working with John at the Umana/Barnes in East Boston. He had a great sense of humor coupled with a wry wit and could make those around him laugh at life's absurdities.
He most most intelligent and an excellent teacher. He very much enjoyed informally mentoring new teachers. My daughter, Krista, was lucky to be one of those who John took under his wing. Today, she teaches in East Boston thaanks in large part to him. He will be missed and remembered by all of those who were fortunate to have known him

A person's life can be measured in many different ways. Some would say the measure of a man is not only by his accomplishments during his lifetime but by how his family speaks of him. John's title of "King Daddy" can only be earned by treating your wife like a Queen and your daughter like a princess. His actions, and the stories of who he was, will always keep him alive in the memory of his family and friends.
I would like to convey my deepest sympathy to the Martine family. John touched many lives at the Umana/ Barnes Middle School. The impact he had on the students was not his only legacy in the school. He brought so much laughter and light to so many situations. I will always remember his smile and dry wit. His humor was something that got many of us through many meetings. He will be missed by many. Please know he is in my prayers.
Sincerely,
Nadine Fernandes, coworker of John’s at the school
