Obituary of Herbert C. Hagele, Jr. M.D.

Dr. Herbert C. Hagele, Jr. Lynnfield - Dr. Herbert C. Hagele, Jr., formerly of Wenham, died unexpectedly Sunday October 30, 2011. He was the husband of the late Betty Jo (Barczak) Hagele of 41 years. He was the son of the late Herbert C. Hagele Sr. and the late Katherine H. (Freund) Hagele, both from St. Joseph, MO. He attended Christian Brothers High School in St. Joseph, MO and then went onto Creighton University. Following graduation from medical school, he began his tour of duty with the Navy. From 1961-1963, he was stationed at Yokuska Naval Hospital in Japan. When he returned to the States in 1963, he began a pediatric residency at Chelsea Naval Hospital. In 1965, he became the Chief of Pediatrics at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital. In 1967, when he completed his active duty with the Navy, he went into private practice as a Pediatrician in Salem, MA. He continued in the Naval Reserves, retiring as a Captain in 1994 at the age of 60. He had worked as the Medical Director at Osram Sylvania in Danvers, MA since 1988. His avid love of history influenced his desire to travel the world with his wife. He proudly served as past President of the Navy League. He was a Trustee of Eastern Bank as well as being a board member. He served on the board of Mass Medical Society, Essex South Medical Society, Wenham Board of Public Health, as well as being the school physician for the City of Salem. He was also an active parishioner at St. Maria Goretti in Lynnfield and St. Paul’s Church in Hamilton. Surviving him are his four loving daughters and their families; VeAnn Leach and her husband Tom of Melrose, CaLee Putnam and her husband Patrick of Georgetown, Elrie Quarantiello and her husband Rick of Newburyport , Terri Hagele and her fiancee Bob Feeney Jr. of Lynnfield, and his eight adoring grandchildren Abbie, C.J., Olivia, Curtis, Lexie, Zane, Tori and Ben. He is also survived by his sister Dr. Mary C. Hagele RSCJ of Evanston, IL, his brother-in-law John J. Barczak of St. Jospeh, MO and his companion Nina Hayes of Farmington, CT. A visitation will be held on Monday November 7, from 4 – 8 p.m. in the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather for his Funeral Mass on Tuesday November 8, at 10 a.m. in St. Maria Gorretti Church, Lynnfield. Burial with Military Honors in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Elizabeth J. Hagele Memorial Scholarship Fund c/o Bishop Fenwick High School in Peabody.
