In 1975 I was the old lady of almost 50 in a class at Essex Aggie of over fifty 18 and 19 yr olds, mostly young men and half a dozen girls. We had great classes with Holten. I beg your pardon, Mr. Brandi. He had the teaching spark and was entertaining, too. He shared sensible ideas with our class. Teaching gave him a chance to perform as well as teach. He was a teacher to be reckoned with....and the kids paid attention.

At that time he was also commuting to NY to teach each week. Cornell, maybe? I cannot quite remember.

I have happy memories of those far away days. After Essex Aggie, I cooked at a nursing home as alternate cook for eight years. I still use many quantity cooking ideas I learned from Holten in those long ago days.

My sympathy to the family. He was a charmer.

My deepest sympathy to the Brandi family. One of my first jobs in high school and college was working for Holten. (starting in the little place on Lake Street and occasionally the house) They are some of the fondest memories I have (oshiburis, ice cream cakes, spanikopita, etc) and stories and lessons I frequently retell. Holten was a unique person filled with passion and drive. I am so grateful for the experience of knowing him and learning so much from him.

Holten and Judy, and their life together, created something very special in Holten Brandi Foods. The stories are endless and the bonds of those that worked there are life long and deeply rooted. Holten and Judy created that - they brought together the most amazing of people, good people, genuine people. I think we will be eternally grateful to the two of them for that. May you rest in peace Holten. You, and Judy, will be very very missed.

Thinking of Holten and the Brandi's: of propane truck fires and Thanksgiving blizzards; of busted dish machines and Peking Chicken Salad; of cowboy hats and Yellowstone; of basketweave wedding cakes and oshiboris; of shouting, cursing and tears then hugs and apologies; of drinking and recovery; of a family who treated me like family; and of a man who made me feel clever and confident. See you 'round the quadrangle, HB. Peace and love, Miss Amy

I am so sad to learn of Holten's passing. My decision to join Holten Brandi Foods, as a full time employee after college, spawned a joyful, happy career in catering. He was a talented caterer, ahead of his times in food styling and service. He was also a smart business man. 25+ years later, in my job as a catering Event Planner, I think of things that Holten taught me. One that I have repeated many times, is "Don't forget to get the gelt!" He actually sent me back to Newton to pick up a check that I was suppose to get at the end of the party. I learned everyday working with Holten.

What I also cherish from my time at Holten Brandi, is all the wonderful people. Many of the most special people I have had the pleasure of knowing, I met working at HB Foods. One friend recently said "If there was a time in my life I could repeat, it would be the time when we worked at HB Foods".

I wanted to express the deepest sympathy to the family, Elisa, Steven, Suzie. I was privileged to have worked with Holten and his family, where I started my career in catering and events at Holten Brandi Foods, Inc. He was a spirited character for starters…, he always created an interlude… of subtle specialties that put a sparkle in every eye, a menu master of a main dish… who knew his craft a flair for flavor, my after thoughts are… a sweet display of fond memories of fine New England places/spaces, food merriment , and a reflection of great affairs. I'm sure that he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Lisa (Baldasare) Christie

My condolensces to you for your loss. Holten Brandi was an institution in the Boston area for many years. I went to school with both Steve and Suzanne, and didn't really know of Holten until my business dealings with him as his Sysco sales rep. It was truly an experience working with Holten. He always let you know where you stood. Peace to all of you in this sad time.

December 20, 2011 -
Because my mother, Madeline Tasker, and Holten's mother, Evelyn Brandi, were closest of friends, it was natural that Holten would enter, and spend a lifetime, as my friend. There was always friendly competition but deep down in our souls there was an admiration and love that never waned. Seeing him at our 50th with his beloved Diane was inspiring and his death leaves a void in my life and heart. I don't think I ever got over the fact that he had the first set of electric trains and the first 3-shift English bicycle of any of us. An envy simmered for years. The round screen TV in his living room was the only place I was allowed to watch television - the "Lone Ranger" on Saturday nights was an especial treat. He had an imagination as big as all ourdoors. Because he was a friend for my entire life I will miss him greatly. John Tasker 944 Park Avenue NYC 10028
