Obituary of Daniel R. Mello

Daniel & Angelina V. (Vieira) Mello PEABODY—Daniel R. Mello, 89, and his beloved wife Angelina V. (Vieira) Mello, 88, both of Peabody, peacefully passed away at their home the same day, on Wednesday January 18, 2012, each now at peace following lengthy illnesses after 69 years of marriage. Daniel was born in Danvers, the son of the late Cyrino and Caroline (Rose) Mello, and grew up there. Angelina was born in Peabody, daughter of the late Manuel and Mary Gloria (Cunha) Vieira, and was a lifelong resident of the city. She graduated from Peabody High School. Daniel worked for A.C. Lawrence Leather before enlisting in the United States Navy during World War II. He was stationed on the Aircraft Carrier USS Bunker Hill CV-17, and fought in 13 battles. He survived a Kamikazee assault, and continued going to reunions with his fellow crew. Daniel was a member of the Portuguese-American War Vets, Post 1 of Peabody. He enjoyed being outside in nature, and gardening for vegetables and flowers. He was gifted creatively, and was known for making Christmas Trees out of hangars. He will be remembered for his generosity and kindness to all. Angelina had been a Sales Clerk at Filene’s a short period of time. She was also creative, and enjoyed knitting clothing for her family, crafts, and painting. She volunteered with Catholic Charities as a Child Care Provider, enjoyed cooking and had a sweet tooth that she cherished up to the last couple of days. She faithfully recited a Rosary daily. They are survived by daughters Christine Dinis of Peabody, along with help of her daughters Kayla Dinis, and her companion TJ Fossa, and Sara Dinis, all of Peabody who dutifully gave home care for her parents in their last several months; a daughter Caroline De Mello of Taunton and her children Donald Twomey, Caroline Twomey & Erin Twomey-Wilson, five great-grandchildren and their extended family. They also leave several nieces and nephews. Daniel was preceded in death by a brother Raymond Mello, and Angelina was the last living of her siblings including Manuel Vieira, Sara Bettencourt, Joseph Vieira, Leo Vieira, John Vieira, and Edward Vieira. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend a Funeral Service celebrating their life legacy together on Tuesday January 24, 2012 at 11 AM in the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody. A visitation will be held on Monday from 4 – 8 P.M. in the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
