Obituary of Victor J. Matsur, Jr.

Victor J, Matsur, Jr., 85, of Peabody, died Monday morning at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers following a brief illness. Born in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, he was the son of the late Victor J. Matsur, Sr., and Celia (Bobola) Matsur. The family moved to Salem before settling in Peabody, where he resided for the last 75 years. During his senior year in high school, Victor, at age 17 with the permission of his parents, volunteered for wartime service in the United States Navy. He served on LST-291and LSMR-518 for two years during World War II and honorably discharged in 1946. He was the recipient of the WWII Victory Medal, American Area Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Medal. Victor received many honors, most notably as a guest of The Prince of Wales in 1996, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the D-Day Invasion at Normandy. After the war, Victor attended Salem Commercial School and received his associate’s degree in accounting. He later continued his education at Salem State College. Victor first worked at CBS Hytron in Danvers in payroll and accounting, advancing the department’s machine accounting technologies. Victor then brought his skills to AC Lawrence Leather factory’s accounting department in Peabody until their closing. Victor completed his career working for the city of Peabody as a payroll accountant. He retired in 1996 with over 20 years of service. Victor was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans and a charter member of the LST Association. He was a member of both the Salem and Peabody Veterans of Foreign Wars and an associate member of the Peabody AOH. Victor enjoyed traveling extensively to Ireland and abroad with his life time companion, Mary M. Milmore. He was extremely proud of his Polish heritage. He is survived by his loving sister, Phyllis Prince of Marblehead and his lifelong companion Mary M. Milmore of Lynn, his niece and godchild Bonnie Hallinan and her husband Gerald of Danvers, his niece Christine Prince of Danvers, his nephew Craig Prince of Marblehead, and two grand nieces, Lindsay and Brooke Hallinan plus many cousins. His Funeral Service will be held on Friday at 11:30 AM at St. John’s Church to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held prior to the service at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Victors name to The Kaplan Family Hospice House, 75 Sylvan St.Danvers MA 01923 or The American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St. Framingham, MA 01701.
