Obituary of Joseph P. McEneaney, Jr.
Joseph P. McEneaney, Jr., 67, of Peabody, professionally known as “Joe Morgan,” died Thursday morning at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers surrounded by his family, following a courageous three year battle against cancer. He was the devoted husband of Ellen (Ducey) McEneaney with whom he shared over 40 years of marriage, and was known for many years as the Airborne Traffic Reporter for WBZ News Radio.
Born in Boston, he was the son of the late Dr. Joseph P. McEneaney, Sr and Anne (Leary) McEneaney. He was raised and educated in Andover and has lived on the North Shore his whole life.
Joe began his broadcasting career in 1968 at WCOP as the Operations Director; eight years later he became the Public Affairs & Editorial Director, News Anchor & Reporter, and the News Director for WRKO. In 1989 he was appointed as the New Director for WHDH-Radio. In 1997 he joined WBZ News radio as the airborne Traffic Reporter before retiring in 2008.
Joe has won dozens of awards for outstanding news, public affairs programming, and editorial research/writing for the AP, UPI, RTNDA, the White House, United States Army, Navy, Air Force, National Guard, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, City of Boston, Scripps-Howard Foundation, Action for Children and many others.
Joe was the devoted husband of Ellen (Ducey) McEneaney, loving father of Karen McEneaney Owen of Methuen, and grandfather to Joseph III, Christopher, Michael, and Emma. He was the brother to Michael J. McEneaney of Boston, Joan McEneaney Enos of Maine, Mary McEneaney Fahey of Andover, Cornelia McEneaney Rulon-Miller of Beverly, and was an uncle and great-uncle many times over. He was predeceased by his sister, Anne Marie McEneaney.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 16th at 12:00 PM at St. Adelaide’s Church, located at 708 Lowell St., Peabody. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Joe’s name to the MGH Development Office, c/o Cancer Center, 165 Cambridge St., Yawkey Suite 7B, Boston, MA 02114. Arrangements were made by the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody.
