Obituary of Charles E. Broughton

Charles E. Broughton, 74, of Peabody, died peacefully on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at his home. He was born in Peabody on December 9, 1938, the son of the late Charles E. and Mary Margret (Letteney) Broughton and was raised and educated here and spent most of his life in Peabody. He had resided at the Tannery for the past 35 years in his familiar neighborhood frequenting his favorite local establishments with his many friends from the Tannery. Charles was self employed with his cleaning service and served his clients as longtime friends. He formerly worked at Kresge’s, Kreys music store, Brigham’s and The Whaler’s Pub all at the NorthshoreShopping Center. He recently was a volunteer at the thrift shop in Peabody. A lover of books, music, and the arts, he kept a full schedule of activities. As a young boy, he and his family summered in Gloucester, MA enjoying the lure of the sun, water and all the beaches, his beloved GoodHarborBeach, movie theaters, nights at Vine St. in Riverdale all made life long memories. Charles also loved SalemWillowsBeach and his collective friends there. He was fond of his many cat companions named “Big Kitty” and numbered one to five with only one surviving. He is survived by his sister, Mary Louise Houghton, the wife of the late George Houghton of Lynn and their children. Also by his longtime friends, Dr. Edmund and Marilyn Cohler and their children and grandchildren and families, Sherry Larrivee and her children and grandchildren, a childhood friend, Gene Murray and his companion and many friends. A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at the family lot at the WatersideCemetery, West Shore Drive, Marblehead at 11:30 AM. Please meet inside the entrance at 11:15 AM.
