Obituary of Anthony P. Leitao

Anthony P. “Tony” Leitao, 65, of Peabody died Tuesday evening at the Kaplan Family Hospice House with his family surrounding him after a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Luisa M. (Silva) Leitao. He was born in Galveias, Portugal on June 3, 1948, the son of the late Domingos and Maria (Vieira) Leitao and had resided most of his life in Peabody. He was a graduate of Peabody High School in 1966 and first attended North Shore Community College and received his teaching degree from Suffolk University and belonged to TKE Fraternity. He had been an accounting teacher at the Peabody Veterans Memorial High School for almost 30 years prior to his retirement 8 years ago. Tony was an ardent soccer player and later became an high school soccer referee for many north shore leagues in high school and college games. He was a member of P.A,F.H.E. Portuguese American for Higher Education council and helped many students in furthering their education. He and his wife liked to travel and enjoyed many trips to Portugal. He is survived by his wife, Luisa, his siblings and their spouses, Elias Leitao of Peabody, Louie and Sunok Leitao of Burke, VA, Maria Leitao/ Grant of Palm Harbor, FL and Sandra and Mario Alves of Peabody, and many nieces, nephews and his Silva in-law family. A Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2-6 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 82 Lynn St., Peabody facility. His funeral will be held on Monday at 9:00 AM from the Funeral Home followed buy a Funeral Mass in St. Ann’s Church, 140 Lynn St., Peabody at 10:00 AM. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
