Obituary of George Anthony Marquis

George A. Marquis, age 87, of Beverly passed away peacefully at his home on Monday morning, March 3, surrounded by his family. Born in Taunton, MA, George was the son of the late Antonio and Caroline Andrade Marquês (Marquis). He grew up in Peabody and graduated from Peabody High School, Class of 1944. George was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy as an aircraft mechanic in the Philippines from 1944-1945. He was honorably discharged from the navy in 1947. After the war, George worked alongside his father as a homebuilder. Together, the two designed and built numerous homes throughout the city of Peabody. The name Santa Ovaia Circle, a cul-de-sac of homes George and his father built near Wilson Square, was chosen in honor of his father's boyhood village, Santa Ovaia, in Coimbra, Portugal. Throughout his life he was particularly interested in architecture and history. George was a graduate of Fitchburg State University. He taught carpentry in the vocational arts departments of the Beverly and Peabody public school systems. As a teacher in Peabody, George oversaw his students in the design and building of many additional homes in the city. He retired from the Peabody Public Schools in 1989 after 27 years of service. George is survived by his wife of 57 years, Emma C. Marquis (neé Thomas), and six children, George A.H. Marquis of Cairo, Egypt, Margaret Marquis-Hemeon of Essex, Alicia Marquis Sheridan of Peabody, William Marquis of Gloucester; Clare Marquis-Rutkowski of Danvers, and Robert Marquis of Norwalk, CT.; sons-in-law Ronald Hemeon, Philip Sheridan and Mark Rutkowski, daughter-in-law Irina Marquis; eight grandchildren, Timothy and Allison Coombs, Evan and Ayden Rutkowski, Alexis and Liam Hemeon, Dana Sheridan and Richard Marquis. He is also survived by two sisters and brothers-in-law, Loretta Somers and her husband, Donald, of Bristol, NH, and Rosemary Holmquist and her husband, Robert, of St. Augustine, FL, and one brother and sister-in-law, Anthony Marquis and his wife, Sandi, of Elliot, ME and St. Augustine, FL. He was predeceased by his sister, Lillian Palatino and brother, Richard Marquis. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. His funeral service will be held on Friday at 8:00 AM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed by his Funeral Mass at 9:00 AM at St. Mary of the Annunciation Church, 24 Conant St., Danvers to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Thursday from 4-8 pm. Burial will follow at Annunciation Cemetery, 155 Hobart St., Danvers.
