Obituary of William "Sam" Soucy

William Samuel Soucy, born on November 9, 1916 in a house in Peabody, passed away on Saturday of old age. Sam was a lifelong resident of Peabody, living in the same house as his parents, Omer and Effie (MacGregor) Soucy. He was educated in Peabody and graduated from Peabody High School, class of 1936. In high school, Sam was a member of the baseball and football teams and excelled in both sports. There were numerous newspaper articles about him. He went on to play semi-pro baseball for the South Peabody A. A. and was especially proud of striking out 21 batters against the Hampstead Town Team from New Hampshire. His greatest love was being a farmer. He worked at farming all his life and as he got on in years, he still maintained a vegetable garden. We worked for the railroad for about 10 years before going to work for Stahl Finishing Company and retired from there in 1983. Sam enjoyed watching the Boston Red Sox, the New England Patriots and the Celtics on TV. He also enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. In his earlier years, Sam liked to go to Suffolk Downs for the horses and Wonderland Park for the dogs. He was also in a bowling league for many years and bowled up until his early 90’s, and he like to play the lottery. Sam did not have a doctor, did not take any medications, and did not need glasses. Sam was never in the service because he was born at the end of WWI and by the time of WWII he was too old to be drafted. Finally, a special thanks to Hilda Sweeter for taking such good care of Sam, he adored her. Sam was never married, but is survived by his loving nieces and nephews, Bruce M. Sweeter and his wife Hilda and Dana S Sweeter and his wife Nancy, all of Danvers, Kevin M. Sweeter and his wife Mary of Peabody, Donna and her husband Joe D’Amico of Nahant, Brian Page and his wife Anna of PA, and Susan and Heather, both of VA, and is also survived by his brother-in-law, Commander Carroll S. Page U. S. Navy, ret., of VA and by several grand nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters, Jennie Sweeter and Helen Page. Sam’s Funeral Service will be held on Thursday at 11:00 AM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
