Obituary of Frederick J. "Flashlight Freddie" Howcroft

Frederick J. “Flashlight Freddie” Howcroft, 68, of Peabody, loving husband of Dina R. (Girolimon) Howcroft, died surrounded by his family on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at the Kaplan family Hospice House in Danvers. Freddie was born on August 12, 1946 in Queens, NY son of the late Robert and Dorothy (Hallahan) Howcroft. He was raised and educated in Peabody and a lifelong resident of the City. Fred enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1964 and served 3 Tours of Duty in Vietnam aboard the LST 1150 which they were referred to as the “River Rats”, and was Honorably discharged in 1967. Fred was employed in 1969 by the Peabody Police Department as a Patrolman and rose to the rank of Sergeant which he held until his retirement from the Department in 1996. During his tenure he was also employed at the Essex County Sherriff Department, and pursued his education at North Shore Community College receiving an Associates Degree. He later received his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Northeastern University and a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice from Anna Maria College. Following his retirement he was employed as an Emergency Room Technician at Beverly Hospital, a CPR instructor, and an instructor for the National Safety Council. Fred was a member of the VFW Fidelity Post 1011 in Peabody and served as a Board of Director, was a Scout Master for Troop 38, coached soccer, and enjoyed kayaking, mountain climbing, repelling and white river rafting as hobbies. In addition to his wife Dina with whom he shared 45 years of marriage, he is survived by his children and their spouses, Caroline and Brian Talbot of Lynn, Nicole and Allan Arico, and Frederick L. Howcroft all of Peabody; his grandchildren, Crystal Talbot, Kaitlyn Talbot, Ethan Arico, Erica Arico and Leciahnna Howcroft; a sister, Donna Boghosian and her husband Gregory of Beverly; his father-in-law, Louis P. Girolimon of Peabody; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Richard and Paula Girolimon of Peabody and many nieces and nephews. Fred’s family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 20 Church St., (Downtown next to City Hall and St. John’s Church) Peabody. His funeral will be held on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at 10 a.m. from the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church, 16 Church St., Peabody.
