I was saddened to read about Michael's passing. He was one of the first people I met when I moved to Greenfield, MA. We were both uprooted Bostonians raising families in our 'sleepy little town.' We also shared mutual feelings of love and respect for the local library as a universal resource. I recall Michael's love for his family and respect for his community. Please know he will be missed and very fondly remembered. Blessings to Michael's family, Vicki Palmer, Greenfield

Peggy & I were saddened to hear of the passing of Mike, but not surprised, due to the severity of his illness. It is hardest on those left behind, but at least he is at peace.
Peggy & Mike shared a common interest of walking the bike path; like two ships passing in the night. Mike would comment, "You need to pick up the pace, your falling behind!"
The only interaction I had with Mike was Conversations on the sidewalk or in his back yard. There was that time he asked me if would make him some storm windows for the cellar. After they were done, he would ask, "well how much do I owe you?" Finally he got tired of waiting for me to tell him, and gave me what he thought they were worth. I told him he paid too much; I work cheap! His remark was, "it's probably not enough!" We're going to mis his dry sense of humor and sharp wit.

While we knew of Mike's illness we are still so very sad to lose a friend such as him. His unique perspective on life and the world around him will be sadly missed. We were fortunate enough to spend time with both Mike and Cathy at our yearly St. Patrick's Day dinners made more enjoyable by Mike and Cathy's soda bread, many movies, and the
Metropolitan Opera tryouts at Jordan Hall, where his ironic wit was always in play. He was truly a modern day renaissance man. We will miss him on so many levels. Keep practicing that sax Mike we'll listen for it. Bill & Lucy Power

I worked with Mike at the Yarmouth Public Library many years ago. Looking back on those times I can say, without a doubt, that was the best job I have ever had and it was 100% because of Mike. He was the smartest, kindest, funniest person and a brilliant librarian. He was always reminding the staff of the beauty and importance of libraries as a foundation of American Democracy. Everyone on staff loved him and he made us a true team. I was also priviledged to be a neighbor on Cousins Island. We both lived in funky cottage renovated houses in a time when our kids could just walk out the door and explore; we could all go fishing or boating, and it was an easy place to be surrounded by nature and relax. Mike was a truly unqiue person. There will never be enough "Mikes" in the world.

I will always look up to you for the amazing work you did in raising your family, being a dedicated and lifelong partner to Catherine, achieving a great education, having an accomplished career, and finding time to have several hobbies and talents. You managed to accomplish all of this while maintaining your quick wit and interesting sense of humor.

I will forever be grateful for the friendships I have gained in your children, especially my very close friend, Carla. Your children and all of their accomplishments speaks volumes to the great work you have done and the tremendous and positive impact you have made in this world.

We shall meet again, until then, keep smiling.

So very sad to hear of Mike's passing. My whole family loved Mike. I so appreciated his great sense of humor, his tender side towards my son when he worked at the library and his continued appreciation for the simple things in life . I will miss driving done lowell street and honking and waving. RIP Mike

As my fishing partner , Michael was always a wealth of erudition , a man determined to gently uplift my level of learning through very deep conversation . Occasionally , purely by accident , he would catch a fish .
In one of our last encounters , he admonished me of my need to put two buckets of water in the bow of the canoe on future fishing trips . I told him that , although the ballast effect would be the same , the depth of conversation would be sorely missed .

Mike was my favorite Library Director, too. I enjoyed working with him. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a love of all the things that make life great. I missed him when he left. That was a tough time for him and all the family. Peace.
