Obituary of Charles Peter Franggos
Charles P. Franggos, 89 years, of Peabody passed away on Tuesday at the Kaplan House Family Hospice after a short illness. Mr. Franggos was born April 22, 1928 in Peabody, son of the late Pantelis and Mary (Kalliavas) Franggos, and stepson of the late Mary (Laberis) Franggos. He was a lifelong resident. He attended Peabody High School. During WWII, he served in the U. S. Navy on the USS St. Paul. During his tour of duty in the Pacific he visited San Francisco, Hawaii, Japan and China. He was honorably discharged in 1948. Mr. Franggos was the proprietor of the Franggos Food Mart in Peabody for 23 years until he sold the business in 1984. He then worked at Essex Agricultural School until his retirement in 1995. As proprietor of Franggos Food Mart, Charlie generously sponsored various youth sports teams in Peabody. Many neighborhood adolescents learned skills of customer service, as well as the importance of a strong work ethic through their employment at Charlie's store. For many, working at Charlie's was their first job, and Charlie became their mentor and friend. A special group of Charlie's former employees, now his dear friends, continued to meet for a Christmas celebration with him every year until his passing. Charlie enjoyed playing cards and other games of chance, traveling to Atlantic City and Las Vegas, doing crossword puzzles and was an excellent ballroom dancer He was a member St. Vasilios Church, and the St. Vasilios Men’s Club. His life was dedicated to his family. He is survived by his sister-in-law Mary Franggos, his niece and her husband Mariann and George Illingworth of Peabody; a nephew and his wife, Peter J. and Tracey Franggos of Byfield; four grand nieces and nephews, Neia (Tony) Marks, Theodora (Nathan) Kennedy of Peabody, Alexis Franggos and John Franggos of Byfield; and a great-grand-nephew, Nathan Kennedy, Jr. of Peabody. He is also survived by his two Godchildren, Christina Chalapatas, and Christine Gillooly, several cousins and dear friends. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, John Franggos and infant George Franggos. Visiting hours will be held on Saturday from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 82 Lynn St. Peabody facility followed by his funeral service at 11:30 AM in St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, Peabody. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
