I was deeply saddened and shocked to learn of the passing of Mary. I last saw her about two weeks ago at St. Adelaides' where we are both ushers at the Saturday 4 o'clock masses. Mary got me started as a volunteer usher about 7 years ago when she asked me to help out with the collection. Thinking that it would be a "one time deal" especially since I accidentally bumped the head of a parishioner with my awkward basket motion and lack of experience, Mary laughed and said "not to worry, Joe" . Ever since then, I was a regular usher. I always reported to her, as head usher, every Saturday, knowing she would always tell me the same assignment which was "why don't you back-up Eddy". I always knew this is what I had to do, but I liked to have her tell me and we always laughed about it. She knew how to keep the collection going smoothly, especially when there were two collections. In fact, when she was absent last week, it was botched. Mary was a "real person", always down-to-earth and a good person and she will be dearly missed. I am richly blessed to know her.
