Obituary of Salvatore Mistretta

Salvatore “Sal” Mistretta, 94, of Peabody died peacefully Sunday, July 15, 2018 at the Rosewood Nursing Home, Peabody, surrounded by his family. He was the husband of the late Anna (Cavicchio) Mistretta, who passed away last year. Sal was born in North Andover, MA on September 24, 1923, the son of the late Frank and Alfia (Cavallaro) Mistretta, and was raised in Peabody, graduating from Peabody High School in 1941. He first was employed by the federal government’s Civilian Conservation Corps, and in 1942 he joined the US Marines, serving in WW II for four years. Upon his discharge, he worked both as a machinist and in the Peabody leather industry. He then joined the Peabody Fire Department and served for over 30 years, retiring as a Fire Captain. Sal earned an Associate degree in Accounting and was a manager at the H& R Block Tax Service on Main St. Peabody for 25 years, and later also had his own tax preparation business, always completing taxes for firefighters free of charge. He was a member and Past Grand Knight of the Leo Council #508 Knights of Columbus and a long-time member of the St. John’s Holy Name Society. He was a member of the VFW Post 1011 of Peabody and the Vittori-Rocci Post of Beverly. Sal ran blood drives with the Peabody Fire Dept. and he donated over 12 gallons of blood for others during his lifetime. He is survived by his children, Karen and her husband John Arnold of Peabody, Elaine Brown of Greenland, NH, and Richard and his wife Susan Mistretta of Lee, NH, a brother, John Mistretta of Beverly, his precious grandchildren, Elaina Flynn, Brian, Daniel and Joseph Arnold, Jenna Surface, Analise Arnold, Rachel and Ryan Brown, and Adam and Katelyn Mistretta, 9 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Alfio, Anthony, and Joseph Mistretta and Josephine Le May. A Visitation will be held on Friday at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 82 Lynn St., Peabody facility from 3:00 until 7:00 PM. His funeral will be held on Saturday at10:00 AM from the Funeral Home followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John’s Church, Peabody at 11:00 AM. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
