Obituary of Lucy C O'Brien

Lucy C. (Mallia) O’Brien 88, beloved wife of the late John D. O’Brien, died Thursday, July 9, 2020 at the Brudnick Center for Living in Peabody surrounded by family. Born and raised in Peabody, Lucy was the youngest of eleven siblings to the late Anthony and Jeanette (Gugliotta) Mallia. She received her education in the Peabody school system and graduated from Peabody High School, class of 1949. Mrs. O’Brien had been employed for twenty-five years as a telephone operator for the Boston Globe until the time of her retirement in 1995. Prior to that she had worked eighteen years for the New England Telephone Company as an operator as well. Lucy was a resident of Peabody for the past 48 years. Prior to that she had lived with her husband in Jamaica Plain where all her children were born. The last several years she lived at the Brudnick Center for Living in Peabody, where she was reunited with her brother Larry, and her sisters Carmie, Georgia and Mary, all living together their final years under one roof. Lucy enjoyed line dancing, playing bridge, and watching old movies. Most of all, Lucy loved cooking meals for her extended family and friends and playing cards afterwards. She was a member of the Vittori-Rocci Post in Beverly and the Peabody Council on Aging. She was a loving mother, wife, grandmother, and friend who will be missed by all who knew her. Surviving her are four sons, Kevin M. O’Brien and his wife Margie of Saugus, Thomas J. O’Brien of Peabody, Kenneth S. O’Brien of Peabody, and Daniel P. O’Brien and his wife Veronica of Haverhill, four grandchildren, Joseph O’Brien, Katie O’Brien, Kelly O’Brien and Timothy O’Brien, a sister-in-law, Gracie Mallia of Peabody and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was also the sister of the late Mary Cena and her husband Guido; Marguerite Cullen and her husband Bill; Carmen Wesala and her husband Elmer (Wes); George Mallia and his wife Tina; Larry Mallia and his wife Catherine (Tina); Johnny Mallia and his wife Lorraine, Georgia Southwick and her husband George, Tony Mallia, Sam Mallia and Joe Mallia.
