Obituary of Manuel C. Candido

Manuel C. Candido, 93, of Peabody, passed away Saturday afternoon at his residence, following a brief illness, in the presence of his loving daughters. He was the beloved husband of the late Mariana (Verissimo) Candido, with whom he shared 64 years of marriage. Manuel was born on August 29, 1927, in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal, son of the late Candido and Olivia (Cunha) Veiga. He was raised and educated there before immigrating to Peabody with his family and his parents in 1970. Prior to his retirement, he worked for GTE Sylvania in Danvers. He enjoyed tending to his garden, pruning his fruit trees and grapevines, reading his Bible and the Portuguese Times newspaper, and going to the Torigian Senior Center. Most important was being surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by her daughters, Leolinda Veiga and her husband Duarte of Lowell, Lucy Sprague of Salem; her grandchildren; Lisa Veiga and her fiancé Tyler Tracy of Pelham, NH, Leslie and Stephen Pereira of Lowell , Jeffrey and Glorimar Veiga of Dracut; twin grandsons, Mark Sprague of Waltham and Matthew Sprague of Salem; Great-Grandchildren, River and Hawk Tracy and Avea Pereira: his brother-in-law Daniel and Francelina Verissimo of Auburn, California; a niece, Celeste Mello of Peabody and many nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors. He was predeceasd by a twin brother and a sister, Maria and Olinto Bettencourt; a nephew, Jose Bettencourt, and a great-nephew, John Mello. Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 17, from 3:00 until 7:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody. His funeral mass will be held on Friday, December 18, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 1 Margin St., Peabody at 10:00A.M. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
