Maureen Brady Gallant.
My sister left us this week after eighty-nine years of life.
I’m eighteen years younger and never knew her as a child or teenager. But I heard stories of how she and our father, Mickey Brady, would ski together, laughing and howling their way down the hill in back of their house in Pownal Vermont.
The Bradys, Maureen and Mickey and Mary Rita, moved to Peabody in 1942, right after Pearl Harbor, buying a small Cape Cod home on Margin Terrace, one of the last houses built anywhere in Massachusetts, or in America for that matter, for the long years of the war. My sister Maureen went to school, graduating from Peabody High in 1949, the year I was born. She met the handsome Andrew Gallant. Off to Salem and the house on Gallows Hill. Three sons, a move to Ohio for Andy’s job. A memorable trip to Hong Kong.
The little house on Margin Terrace called her back and she lived there again, for thirty more years. Till she moved into Peabody Senior Housing at the old High School where she graduated many years before. The circle of a life, indeed.
My sister Maureen spoke her mind. She told a good, long story, with several detours along the way. She liked her lobster salad and a good Pina Colada at Su Chang’s. And, of course, checking out the next table over - “That looks good. What are they having?”
My wife and I will miss her.
