Obituary of Maria (Correia) Amaral
Maria (Correia) Amaral, 94, beloved wife of the late William “Bucky” Amaral, died Tuesday evening at the Rosewood Skilled Nursing Center in Peabody following a long illness.
Born in Lowell on October 12, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Francisco and Rufina (Silva) Correia. She lived in Lowell for 24 years, and graduated from Lowell High School. She married her husband, “Bucky”, in 1936, moved to Peabody where she lived for nearly 71 years, and enjoyed almost 55 years of marriage.
Maria worked as a Sales Clerk with Webber’s Department Store in Salem for 20 years. She attended North Shore Community College in Beverly where she earned her Teaching Assistant Certificate, then was a Bi-Lingual Teacher’s Aide and Teacher’s Assistant in the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program at the Higgins Junior High School for 11 years until her retirement.
Together with her husband “Bucky”, as he served on the City Council and a Past Treasurer for the City of Peabody, they were involved in numerous community and civic activities. She was an active communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church, and also the Tannery II Social Committee.
Mrs. Amaral will be dearly missed by friends and family, and is survived by: a daughter and son-in-law, Ruth & Roland Tripp of Cary, NC; a son-in-law, James Carter of Peabody; three grandchildren, Beth & Edward Mazzetta of Peabody, Regina & Jeff Caldwell of Holly Springs, NC, and Richard Tripp of Raleigh, NC; three great-grandchildren, Jill Mazzetta of Peabody, and Austin and Payton Caldwell of Holly Springs, NC; a sister-in-law, Hilda Prata of Peabody, and a dear cousin, Margaret Cabral of New Bedford, and many nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Dolores Carter, a sister Georgina Correia, and two infant sisters. On behalf of the Amaral family, they wish to express their thanks and appreciation to the entire staff of Rosewood Nursing & Rehab Center for their loving care of Maria these many years.
The family will receive friends and family during her visitation on Monday from 4 to 8 P.M. at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody. All are kindly invited to her funeral, held on Tuesday at 9 AM from the funeral home, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 AM in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Peabody. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
